Before I came to this course, I was actually studying game concept design (illustrations which show the design idea of game characters, items and scenes.). I was really impressed by the close connection between the artists in the game art field. From my observation, the interaction between concept designers is closer than that of designers in other industries, because in the field of game art, there is a very strong atmosphere of ‘social based on works’.
Compared with LinkedIn, they actually use social platforms (Weibo, Twitter) and Artstation（a specialized social networking site for game art）. They don’t need a resume to explain their abilities. The only thing they need is to upload their work. And work will come to them by itself.
Although we now have platforms like behance and dribbble, when I was doing research on competing products, I found that most people still use them as a platform for finding inspiration rather than a job and social platform. Most people still prefer to put their work on their portfolio website, and then send it to HR when submitting a resume. This also results in a lot less connection and interaction between designers in other industries compared with game artists.
But as a person who lacks experience in UX design, this project is undoubtedly very difficult for me. Although the problem I want to solve seems to be simple: Portfolio Dilemma, in fact, this problem is very big. In my research,
If I thinking about it carefully, there are actually three problems I want to solve:
1. There are too many tools for building a portfolio website, too many unnecessary functions for portfolio websites, and time-consuming and not easy to learn.（Provide a time saving way to
build a portfolio）
2. When applying for a job, it is difficult to track whether HR has seen your portfolio. (Strengthen the connection between HR and job seeker)
3. It is difficult to get to know more peers in the same industries through portfolio websites. (Increase browsing and strengthen ties between peers)
I was trying to solve these problems at the same time in just one project, so my project positioning is very ambiguous. At that time, I wanted to build a social platform based on a portfolio website. I thought that designers might also need a ‘LinkedIn’ in ‘designer version’ . Unlike ordinary LinkedIn, portfolios are also a very important part of their profile. This seems to be able to solve three problems at the same time. But it seems that I have not succeeded in persuading my audience, because this platform is both a website builder and a social platform, as well as a hire platform. The overall positioning is too strange and complicated.
So I think I should only focus on one of the above issues to design a small and beautiful product.
My partner and I limited the scope of designers to ‘students who learn design & art’ (because students usually have less project experience and rely more on portfolios). This project will focus on the connection between HR and school students and I very much hope that this product will make sense after I narrow down the idea.
